A pioneer in renewable energy investment, Foresight Solar was the UK’s largest investment trust dedicated to solar when it listed in the London Stock Exchange in 2013.

In more than a decade of investment, it has continued to grow, deploying more than £1 billion to build and manage a portfolio of assets responsible for roughly 1GW of generating capacity in the UK and abroad.

As at 31 December 2024, Foresight Solar has delivered an annualised total NAV return of 7.4%. An investment in one FSFL share when it went public would have provided a total shareholder return of 51%.

In May 2024, Foresight Solar hosted its first Capital Markets Event to meet with shareholders and present its strategy to deliver income and growth. 

With the sector affected by a challenging macro environment, the Board of Directors and the Investment Manager took early action to adjust to a new environment of higher interest rates for longer. 

This included a transition to a total shareholder return strategy, which involves modest investment in a proprietary development pipeline to generate capital growth in addition to the yield generated by the operational portfolio. 

Battery storage systems (BESS) are a natural complement to renewables and a requirement for a lower carbon economy. 

The intermittent nature of solar and wind needs to be balanced with energy storage solutions if electricity grid operators are to successfully manage supply and demand requirements.

The opportunity to capitalise on the nascent battery storage market led shareholders to vote overwhelmingly in favour of an investment policy update in 2020 to include BESS projects in Foresight Solar’s mandate.

The following year, FSFL made its first battery investment in the 50MW Sandridge BESS project in Wiltshire, UK. 

In 2024, the Company agreed a framework with Chelion Iberia, a battery engineering, financing and integration firm, to progress development-stage BESS projects in Spain and capture the opportunity in a market reliant on renewables.
